How Do I Keep My Basenji From Digging?

Many DOGS love to dig holes, and some breeds were even designed for it. If you own a basenji and have a yard, at some point you're likely to run into this problem. So how do you keep a basenji from digging holes and making a mess of everything? Here are some quick tips that may help you get to the bottom of this problem.

Part of the reason that basset hounds have such a unique look is that the British purposely bred basset hounds to have short legs, so that hunters could keep up with them. Unfortunate this has caused the breed to be prone to leg/joint problems.

Possible reasons your basenji may be digging:

If you want your dog to win Westminster then you may want to get a Fox Terrier. Why? The winningest dog in Westminster history is Ch. Warren Remedy, a Fox Terrier, who won best In show in 1907, 1908 and 1909.

He/she comes from a breed that loves to dig (terriers are notorious for this) He/she is looking for some attention He/she is bored and has nothing else to do (this isn't a joke--dogs need both physical and mental exercise to keep out of trouble) He/she is responding to a natural instinct for shelter and a den He/she is searching for a mate

The boxer breed was so named for his manner of fighting. As opposed to biting, like most dogs would, a boxer will actually begin a fight by "punching" with its front paws, just liek a human boxer.

If it becomes clear that one of these reasons is the main culprit, then that gives you various courses of action you can take to take care of the digging. If it isn't obvious, then there are still courses of action you can take in order to help wean them off this problem behavior.

Lhasa Apsos are small, long-haired dogs. Believe it or not, they were originally used by monks to guard temples. This accounts for their quiet and friendly nature, which can easily change if their owners or home are threatened.

First, when you do catch your basenji digging, be consistent and show them that this is not acceptable. A gentle spray of the hose, a stern warning, or restricting them to a small caged in area may help reinforce these ideas.

The oldest pure-bred British dog is said to be the Corgi. Their proof of existence has been traced back to dogs brought to Wales by the Celts from the Black Sea around 1200 BC.

Try giving your basenji a lot of exercise. Basenjis who burn off energy are far less likely to dig then ones who are excited. This will solve the problem most of the time. Also, pay attention to see if there's a specific time they are doing this. Some basenjis just like to be helping out, so if you're digging holes in a garden, they think they're just lending a helpful paw! And if this is due to looking for a mate, but you don't want the problems of puppies, you should look at getting your basenji fixed.

The smallest breed of dog recognized by the American Kennel Club is the Chihuahua, which stands six to nine inches at the top of the shoulders and generally weighs two to six pounds. Their size makes them excellent travel companions.

Try these methods, and with some steady and consistent training you should be able to solve this problem.

Many people think that the kerry blue terrier is the national dog of Ireland. Actually, the Irish government never has given this designation to any breed. Michael Collins, one of Irelands most famous patriots, introduced legislation to elevate the Kerry Blue, or the Irish Blue Terrier as they were then called, to the national dog of Ireland. After his murder, the interest in the initiative was lost.
