Once you decide to get a basenji, the next logical decision is where to get the basenji from. While there are many choices available, several can be quickly ruled out.



Chow Chows have very unusual mouths. When they are born they look normal enough. However, by the age of about 8 weeks, their gums and tongues go from pink to an odd shade of bluish-black.


Pet stores and newspaper advertisements, as a rule, should be avoided. Generally they are not informed about the breeds at all. They are usually out to turn a fast profit.



The diminutive tibetan spaniel, with his feather-like tail, may look a bit like other spaniels, but the breed is actually not a spaniel at all, but more closely related to some combination of the shih tzu, pug, pekingese and Japanese chin.

Generally some level of untidiness is acceptable, as it�s impossible to pick up after every basenji every minute, but the puppies should be kept in a clean, safe environment.
