Should I Get My Basenji From a Basenji Rescue?

There is a common misconception that all rescue basenjis are damaged goods. That is, that they all have been abused in one form or another and are thus unpredictable and unstable. While that is true of some basenjis, it is far from true for all of them.

The first breeding Weimaraners were imported to the US in 1938 by Howard Knight, a dog fancier from Rhode Island. In 1942, The Weimaraner Club of America was formed and the breed standard was created.

Unfortunately, its often impossible to trace the complete history of a lot of rescue basenjis. Therefore, you may not know what the basenjis original name was, whether or not it was actually abused, or what commands, if any, it has been trained to recognize. For instance, a basenji may have been taught that down means to stop jumping on people, while basenji B may have been taught a different word for that action, such as off. This means that it will take both you and the basenji time to adjust to each others attitudes, routines and expectations.

The tibetan terrier is not a true terrier and is probably more closely related to the lhasa apso. However, the tibetan terrier is indeed from Tibet, where monks once treasured this intelligent breed of dogs as guardians of their temples.

If you cant determine the history of a basenji then it may be a bad choice for you if you already own other pets or if you have small children. A basenji that may have been abused could potentially lash out toward children or other pets, out of fear or aggression. You, as an adult, are more capable of defending against such circumstances.

The Bloodhound doesn't need to smell blood to find someone who is lost. It is said that his name instead means blooded hound, or aristocratic. They actually track people because people leave a trail of skin cells with their own unique odor wherever they go.

However, if you know the basenjis history, they can make excellent family pets. For instance, perhaps a basenjis owner treated them wonderfully, but died unexpectedly. In such cases, there are usually no issues of abuse or viciousness. These basenjis would love and enjoy a new, lively family after their rescue center stay.

In the late 1800's, rough collies were known as Scottish Sheepdogs. The name was eventually changed to rough collie. This is probably due to the fact that both rough and bearded collies were developed in Scotland to help herd sheep.

Above all, consider the individual basenji. Introduce your family, and even other pets, to it before making a final decision. If the basenji takes to you and you take to it then you probably have a great match.

The bichon frise breed is quite old. Originally they used to belong only to kings and queens. However, eventually they became known for their abilty to learn tricks and for their excellent sense of balance. As a result, they gained a reputation for being excellent as circus dogs.
