Each basenji show is slightly different, but certain things are true for every basenji show.
The Schipperke, or "little captain", is generally thought of as being solid black in the USA. However, they do actually come in other colors. The reason they are commonly thought to only be black, is that the black variety is the only type currently recognized by the AKC.
Dog shows are essentially an elimination competition. Each basenji must beat other basenjis in its own breed, group and, in the case of an all-breed show, then finally beat DOGS from other groups for best in show. During this competition each basenji is exhibited, or handled, by its owner or a hired professional. Then the basenjis are shown in the judging ring and judged by a professional.
Schipperke is Flemmish for "little captain" and the name is appropriate because most schipperkes seem to act almost human. they are happy, intelligent and usually enjoy being the center of the universe around them.
Much of a basenji's success in competition depends on three things. The first is how closely the basenji fits the standards for its breed. The second is whether or not the basenji and handler can handle competition without being distracted by crowds, noises and other things. The third factor is the judge. Each judge is going to have his or her own unique preferences. Although each judge works from a set standard, more than one basenji may fit the standard. At that point it can sometimes come down to personal preference.
The official name of the dogs we call pitbulls is the American staffordshire terrier. Pitbulls have been the preferred pet of many famous people including Fred Astaire, Vin Diesel, Alicia Silverstone, Michael J. Fox, and James Caan.
If you are a first-time basenji show spectator, there are some things you should be aware of. First, if the grooming area is open, use it to your advantage. Ask the handlers questions about their breeds. This can be a great way to learn about different DOGS and choose your next pet or possibly even learn how to become a DOG show handler yourself. Also, be sure to visit the information booths for information about the show itself, as well as each breed that is represented.
The largest and the smallest dogs to live in the White House were both there during the tenure of president James Buchanan. The president had a Newfoundland named Lara. His niece, Harriet Lane, had a tiny toy terrier named Punch.
If you are taking children to the show, be sure that they do not try to touch DOGS, pull their tails or otherwise interfere with the DOGS. It can be tempting, but many basenjis have been specially groomed for judging and petting them can affect the outcome of the competition.
Border collies are excellent at herding. But they don't descriminate between livestock and other things. This makes them great at things like fly-ball, obedience, tracking, fetching, Frisbee toss, and sheep herding. Sometimes they get out of hand though, several border collies have been known to try to herd small groups of children!
Remember that, when visiting a basenji show, the only bad question is one that you never ask. Learn from your fellow spectators, handlers and any officials that might be available to chat and you'll greatly improve your basenji show experience.
The Podengo, a rare breed of dog, is also known as the Portuguese Warren Hound. It is usually a fawn or yellow color, but can be brown, black or sooty colored without white patches or spots. It resembled a long-bodied chihuahua.
