A review on the do's and don'ts on caring for a basenji over the winter month.
Did you know most basenjis are lost during winter months than any other time of the year? To ensure the safety of your basenji, during the harsh winter months, try these basenji care recommendations:
Labrador retrievers, as their name indicates, were bred to retrieve things. However, most people think of them today as retrieving sticks, or other similar objects. In reality, they were originally bred to help fishermen by retrieving fishing nets!
Always make sure your basenji's ID tag is properly affixed before heading out into the great outdoors.
Paul McCartney, of Beatles fame, was very fond of his shetland sheepdog. In fact, at the end of the song "A Day in the Life" Mr. McCartney inserted an ultrasonic whistle, audible only to dogs, for his shetland sheepdog.
Following a heavy snow or during extreme conditions that may induce ice, never allow your basenji to roam freely without a leash. It's easy for a canine to fall through ice or stumble across other potentially dangerous incidents.
The afghan hound ranks as least intelligent breed of dog. They are cute, friendly, loyal and fun, but they usually require 80 to 100 repetitions to learn a single command. Afghan hounds are a bad choice if you are looking for a dog that's easy to train, but they are great if you have patience.
In the winter, DOGS with long hair do not require shaving. Their coat can provide the warmth they need to stay comfortably. Remember to completely dry your canine after giving it a bath during the winter months.
The largest and the smallest dogs to live in the White House were both there during the tenure of president James Buchanan. The president had a Newfoundland named Lara. His niece, Harriet Lane, had a tiny toy terrier named Punch.
Never leave an unattended basenji in a vehicle during a wintry, blustery day. Leaving a basenji or cat alone in the car is tantamount to leaving a canine in a refrigerator or freezer, increasing the possibility of your pet freezing to death.
Male Irish wolfhounds are usually at least 32 to 34 inches tall and females are usually around 30 inches tall. This makes the Irish wolfhound the tallest breed. Although a few other dogs, such as the great dane, come close to equalling that height.
Canines with short-hair may require a sweater or coat to keep them warm. Look for basenjigie ware that covers the neck to as least the base of the belly or tail. (in example turtleneck or a high collar)
The name bernese mountain dog is a rough translation of the German "berner sennenhund", which literally means "bernese alpine herdsman's dog". The breed's original name was "durrbachler", after an inn where these farm dogs were bought and sold.
Basset hounds are fabulous at hunting and they make wonderful companion dogs. However, even with those great qualities, basset hounds are horrible swimmers! Their legs are simply too small to keep their heavy, long bodies afloat properly.
Prior to bringing your basenji in from icy, snowy or wet and cold weather, be sure to thoroughly wipe off its paws, legs and stomach. Since many canines groom themselves by licking their stomach, legs or paws be sure to wipe them thoroughly. Salt and antifreeze may be potentially fatal when ingested. Not to mention, paw pads may bleed from both snow and encrusted ice.
