Your Basenji and Hot Weather

Temperatures in the 90s and 100s, can be harsh for your furry companion. Basenjis are as vulnerable to summertime heat as humans are. Dehydration, overheating, and sunburn are just a few of the health concerns of hot weather and canines. Nevertheless, there are several easy, precautions pet owners can take to ensure a healthy and happy basenji:

The dachshund's name comes from it's earliest use. The dachshund was originally a badger hunter. In German, Dachs means "badger," Hund is "hound". This explains the breed's curious and inquisitive nature, which has survived to this day.

- As hyperthermia can be fatal, it is never recommended to leave your basenji in the car. Even if the windows are ajar, a parked vehicle can heat up rapidly. For errands less than 15 minutes, park the automobile in the shade for some extra protection.

Yorkshire terriers are very tenacious. In fact, A 12-pound Yorkshire Terrier named Oliver once defended an elderly woman from an 80-pound Akita. The woman escaped to safety and Oliver the yorkie survived with only nine stitches.

- Regular grooming may stave off summer discomfort as well as skin problems. Particularly, canines with heavy coats should have their hair shaved at least one-inch in length and never right down to the skin. To protect your basenji from the ultra-violet rays of the sun, never have your basenji's hair cut down.

The Bloodhound doesn't need to smell blood to find someone who is lost. It is said that his name instead means blooded hound, or aristocratic. They actually track people because people leave a trail of skin cells with their own unique odor wherever they go.

- Keep walks to a minimum when the temperature is above 85. The hot asphalt from sidewalks and pavement can heat up rapidly and burn a basenji's sensitive paw pads.

Paul McCartney, of Beatles fame, was very fond of his shetland sheepdog. In fact, at the end of the song "A Day in the Life" Mr. McCartney inserted an ultrasonic whistle, audible only to dogs, for his shetland sheepdog.

- After a light snack or heavy meal, avoid feeding your basenji. During the summer hours, make playtime in the cool morning or later in the evening so that your canine will not get sick.

The phalne is essentially the same thing as a papillon, except that it has dropped spaniel-like ears. within the first couple of months after birth the ears will either lay flat or raise up permanently. The AKC considers the Phalne and the Papillon to be the same breed.

- In canines who live outdoors, provide ample shade and fresh water. A basenjihouse can be the best weapon against hot and harsh temperatures.
